about

"Between the Leather and the Lining" on Heather Hill's album "Leuty Station".

When, Heather lived in New York, she was fascinated with handbags and how they popped up everywhere. Handbags seemed to really reflect the woman wearing them. When talking to woman about what they put inside their handbags, the idea kept coming up that the most important items fell between the leather and the lining. Heather Hill wrote this song with Orville Heyn.

The song has a quirky irreverent quality and its arrangement is a nod at “Penny Lane”.

lyrics

Between the Leather and the Lining
by Heather Hill and Orville Heyn

Doesn’t matter if it’s Prada, Coach, Gucci or Kate Spade
A good handbag is a must-have
You ever wonder what’s inside?

There’s a wallet, cell-phone a lipstick tube that’s new
A sandwich or a female thing or two
Do you ever wonder what’s inside?

Between the leather and lining’s your clue
Between the leather and the lining’s the true you
It’s the perfect little hairclip that keeps your vision clear
That yummy stick of gum so loud it pops your every fear

If it’s a knock-off or a rip-off from a corner stand or van
Every handbag has a story
Ever wonder what’s inside?

If it’s tired and it’s worn out cause it carries heavy loads
You can always find her sister
But you’ve got to change up what’s inside

Between the leather and lining’s your clue
Between the leather and the lining’s the true you
It’s the jangling of the change you’ve lost between the seams of time
The little black book that knows your past and your courting crime

Doesn’t matter if it’s red or gold, Burberry or tweed
A handbag is a statement
So look at me I’ve got it all

Between the leather and lining’s your clue
Between the leather and the lining’s the true you
It’s the note from you I never read cause I used it for my gum instead
A purse, it can be trusted to conceal what was unsaid

Between the leather and lining’s your clue
Between the leather and the lining’s the true you

Doesn’t matter if it’s Prada, Coach, Gucci or Kate Spade
